Moments after his 46-yard attempt sailed several feet wide of the right upright as time expired, veteran kicker Dale Brennan reportedly gathered his teammates in the locker room Sunday to assure them that the kick had been “mentally good.”

“Look, I know what the scoreboard says, but in my heart, that ball went right through the middle,” said Brennan, 34, who was released by the team roughly 40 minutes later. “If you watch the replay with your eyes closed, it’s honestly a perfect kick.”

According to sources inside the locker room, Brennan then walked teammates through a frame-by-frame breakdown of the kick on a whiteboard, repeatedly circling the moment the ball left his foot and noting that “everything up to here was textbook.”

“If you watch the replay with your eyes closed, it’s honestly a perfect kick.”

“Technically, I made contact with the ball, which is the hardest part,” Brennan continued. “The rest of it is just aerodynamics and wind and a bunch of stuff that’s frankly outside my control.”

Head coach Rick Daltry told reporters he “respected the confidence” but added that the organization had decided to move in a direction that included kicks going through the uprights.

At press time, Brennan had reportedly signed with a division rival, telling reporters that every kick he has ever attempted has been good “in the ways that matter.”
